Andy Lay, CPP, CDP

DFW – March 21 – 22

Andy’s photographic journey started in earnest in high school as a photographer for the school newspaper and yearbook where he had free reign over camera gear and a darkroom.  He was always been fascinated with what he saw in the Time-Life books on photography and began trying to replicate the results in the darkroom with the school’s 120mm twin-lens reflex camera and my Minolta 35mm film camera.  He gained additional photojournalism experience as a photographer for his college newspaper, The Daily Princetonian, and in a couple of fine art photography classes that helped to refine his darkroom printing skills.

Through all these experiences and even with photographing a wedding, his aim wasn’t to earn money. His motivation was, and largely still is, the technical challenge. He has always been intrigued with the technology side of photography.  His camera became one of his essential tools in life.

Fast forward through his career as a software design engineer at Lockheed Martin to about 2009 when he I joined a local camera club.  Through regular monthly competitions and numerous photographic trips around the US, the excellent photographic work he saw pushed him to become much more intentional and artistic in his photography.

Camera gear, lenses, printers and accessories soon began to accumulate around his house. As retirement approached, he started a photography business in 2015 as a potential means of funding his continued acquisition of photographic gear.

After 38 years in corporate life, he retired in 2016 and started connecting with the PPA, TPPA and his local guild with the goal of achieving professional skills and recognition that would further his business endeavors.

Andy says, “Looking back, I realize now that my camera club experience prepared me quite well for engagement at the professional level.  I must say, though, my greatest improvement has come through my wife of 41 years who is a natural-born visual artist.  She has provided constant encouragement to me since we met in high school and has taught me how to find the artistry and beauty in my images and that has changed the way I see the world.  As military dependents we both traveled often and, at times, lived overseas.  We are blessed now with the ability to continue our travels and share images from around the world.”
