2009 Print Competition Scores
"Kick Back" is the theme for the `09 TPPA Summer Seminar in Kerrville.
It’s a time to gather with friends, gain a few new ones and simply relax
in a wonderful family atmosphere. Sit in on the print competition, catch
the speakers, catch the sunset then relax by the pool, but be careful,
it’s contagious.
Experience the Kerrville difference set in the beautiful Texas Hill
Country. Join us daily for some awesome and inspirational talent. Theme
nights are back! There will be a different theme each night of the
seminar. We’ll start with “Sunset Sunday,” ease into “Kickback Monday,”
and complete with “Tailspin Tuesday.” Each evening we will have music
and loads of hospitality; it’s the Kerrville difference.
That is why Kerrville has become the site for this fabulous event for
nearly three decades. So, come join me and see why so many photographers
journey to the beautiful Texas Hill Country and why their children, and
even their grandchildren, continue to make it a family event year after
year. There is something for the whole family.
New Members Orientation
If you are a new member or if this is your first time at Kerrville I
want to invite you to attend the New Member Orientation on Sunday
evening. This is the perfect opportunity to discover what your
association can do for you and possibly win some door prizes. Find out
how to get involved in print competition and other events that will make
you a better photographer and business person.
Attention Golfers! Scramble on Monday!
Adding to the vacation atmosphere of the Summer Seminar some will want
to play in the golf scramble on Monday morning at the Lady Bird Johnson
Golf Course in nearby Fredericksburg. You will need to pre-register for
this, so contact Steve Armstrong at 512-892-7911 for more details.
Others might want to slip away for some shopping in Fredericksburg or
Comfort. There might even be an opportunity to take the kids to the
nearby State Park. At sundown the deer are walking around looking for a
hand-out.
Print Competition
Perhaps the best learning experience awaits you with the annual print
competition. Everyone is encouraged to enter, but even if you don’t, you
will gain valuable knowledge just by sitting in on the judging itself.
If you really want to get some first hand experience with print
competition, volunteer to work as a print handler. Please contact the
Print Room Chairman, Lewis Kincheloe, at 512-930-4250 or email him at
posimage@texas.net. Also, back by popular demand, we will have an
“informal print critique” on Sunday night and again on Monday night.
Inspirational Programs
This year’s lineup of programs begins on Sunday afternoon with our own
Gayletta Tompkins who will discuss many of the aspects of running a
successful studio in today's world. She will also share how her charity
work with Children's Miracle Network has made an impact on her, her
business, and her clients. Then, Keith and Jenny Branch will take the
stage for the entire day on “Taking Your Studio to the Next Level.”
Keith and Jenny have developed a collection of educational items for
professional photographers and run one of the leading studios in Arkansas.
Everyone will be in for another real treat with Ralph and Cindy
Romaguera, who will take the stage all day Tuesday and will continue on
Wednesday morning. Their program, "How to Make a Good Living with Your
Eyes, Your Heart, and a Camera" will demonstrate how they manage three
successful studios in the Greater New Orleans area. It will be an
informative program covering everything from business to posing and
lighting. Don't miss this opportunity to learn how to give yourself a
competitive edge in this business with proven techniques.
Let’s Not Forget About the Farm!
This Monday evening outing is for the entire family! If you like melt in
your mouth barbecue, if you like games for the kids, if you like
swimming and good scenery, if you like hayrides, if you like a petting
zoo, and if you like the company of good friends, plan to make the
journey to the Farm Country Club!
In addition to the “fun” stuff, there will also be three excellent
“mini-programs” just for you. Jenny Hollis will explain the inspiration
and formula behind her signature style with "It All Starts with Raw
Materials." Carrell Grigsby will demonstrate how to save time and make
more money with family groups by "Building a Background Library." Then,
if you've ever photographed dogs in a family or senior portrait, don't
miss "How to Speak DOG" with Margaret Bryant. Each program is only about
20 minutes and each one will be repeated three times so everyone will
have a chance to attend all three. Can’t beat that!
Back at the Hotel
The President’s Hospitality Suite is always the setting for snacks and
fellowship, so drop in and meet the people who work so hard to put this
event together. Or, just kick back and enjoy a cool breeze beside the
pool. Or, browse through Vendor’s Row where vendors set up shop right in
their rooms and open them to you. All the latest things are there for
you. There is usually plenty of complimentary ice cream, too!
Kid’s Photo Contest
What began several years ago as a way to entertain the kids, has become
one of the high points of the entire seminar... a photo contest just for
kids! Thanks to the generous donations from Kodak, dozens of
one-time-use cameras will be given to kids so they can all enter their
own contest. Every child receives a participation certificate as well as
a distinguished print ribbon from the best of their own collection.
Anyone interested in serving on the Kids Kontest committee should
contact Judy Dumas by e-mail at dumasfoto@hotmail.com or call her at
325-646-1773.
Awards Dinner
The highlight of the entire event is the Tuesday night awards dinner. It
will be an informal event for the whole family, but that won’t take away
from the excitement of it all! Another important event will take place
at the Awards Dinner before we begin presenting the adult awards and
trophies... we will recognize the kids who take part in the Kiddie Photo
Contest. After recognizing the kids we will announce the results of the
Sunday print competition. Come see for yourself who’s who in Texas
photography!
Reservations
The YO Ranch Resort Hotel and Conference Center is blocking the entire
hotel for the TPPA seminar. Special seminar room rates of $86.00 for
single or double are available if you make your reservation by May 21,
2009. After that date regular room rates apply and the hotel will take
reservations from other guests. You should make your room reservations

Taking Care of Business
Those who want to take the PPA Certification Exam can do so Monday
morning at 8 am. However, you must contact the PPA at least two weeks
PRIOR to the Summer Seminar! For more information on the PPA
Certification Exam, contact Les Lopez at lopezles@sbcglobal.net.
Also, there will be a General Membership Meeting at 4 pm immediately
after the Romaguera program on Tuesday. Make sure you are there and be
involved in your association.
Love Those Sponsors!
Summer Seminars just would not be the same without the various companies
that sponsor speakers and other events. Please support them and take a
moment to thank them for their generosity. Also, be sure to visit
Vendors Row whenever you can. These people are the ones who make our
summer seminar so affordable to everyone.
President’s Theme Trophy
Each year a trophy is presented to the image that best captures the
president's theme. This year's print competition theme is “ motion.”
Explore the not so obvious! Go for it, take a risk, and most of all,
have some fun. The winner will be selected from prints at the general
exhibit, so keep that in mind when selecting prints to enter this year.
Remember... June 14 - 17. See you there!
