“In order for the light to shine so brightly, the darkness must be present.”
Sir Francis Bacon
Join one of the country’s premier portrait artist, Mark Bryant, as he leads us on a journey of Light and Shadows.
Within photography it is often said “see the light”, but Mark stresses that you must KNOW light first. He embraces the quote by George Eastman:
“Light makes photography. Embrace light. Admire it. Love it. But above all, know light. Know it for all you are worth and you will know the key to photography.”
His goal in lighting most portraits and especially sports portraits is to capture a full range of specular highlights, long range of midtones graduating into deep robust shadows which define and provide a backdrop for the details.
Every one from renaissance painters, classical portraitists, today’s composite artists, and the general population snapping with their iPhones need light to share their vision with the world. Without light we can not illuminate our subjects and without shadows we cannot define or evoke an emotional response from the viewer.
Light behaves in a very predictable way. Each ray of light travels in a straight line. As photographers, most of us have a bevy of modifiers to focus, bend, alter the direction of light rays (diffuse), and different applications for the desired effect. In order to master light it is important to know light properties: such as Intensity, color and contrast. It is equally important to know that the subject reacts to light either by absorption, refraction, reflection, or any combination of the three.
In this deep-dive workshop, Mark will share the principle tools he uses and his approach to creating stunning portraiture.
In this workshop, Mark will share:
The concept of Form Fill
Why shadows are your friend
Lens perspective/camera perspective in relationship with a composite portrait
How to make an emotional statement with composition
Digging deeper into posing techniques

Meet Mark Bryant:
I spent from birth through kindergarten in Browning Montana on the Blackfoot Reservation at the edge of Glacier Park where my parents were missionaries for ten years. I was a 3 sport athlete (small high school 43 graduating seniors in my class) and a lurker in the arts. My future wife Sandra was on the yearbook staff:) We were high school sweet hearts! We spent a year at Trinity Bible Institute (following marriage) and the following year enrolled in Ohio Institute of Photography and graduating in 2 years.
Sandra and I moved back home to Missoula, Montana and I worked for a year with a local studio doing school photography, weddings and portraits at their studio/park setting. Starting our business the following year. We have been in the same commercial location in downtown Missoula for 35 years. We have 2 adult daughters both married with children.
We love the Montana outdoors as avid ATV,Snowmobile,Sea Do adventure seekers!
We are huge fans of most sports but March Madness and college football are at the top of the heap.
Our life’s motto is God first, Wife/Husband,family,avocation and adventure!
